Do mattresses need cleaning too?

Mattress Unlike bed sheets, which are easy to wash, mattresses are bulky, can’t be folded or cleaned—and even moving them to the balcony for ventilation is no small feat. But leaving a mattress uncleaned for too long simply isn’t an option, especially after extended use. Mattress Dust, bacteria, and dust mites are present in such environments, making it unhealthy to sleep there—so how should we clean our mattresses?

Below, we'll discuss how to clean the mattress for several common scenarios of soiling.

1. Removing Dust from Mattresses
If your mattress has been in use for a while and has accumulated a lot of dust, it’s recommended that you flip it over each time you change the sheets or duvet cover. Then, lean it against a wall and gently tap it repeatedly with a wooden stick to loosen the dust trapped on the surface. Finally, vacuum it clean. Of course, if you have a spacious balcony at home, you can also take the mattress out there to air it out for added freshness.

2. Removing Urine Stains from Mattresses
Children often wet the bed while sleeping. Once it dries, not only does it leave behind an unpleasant odor, but also unsightly urine stains. To tackle this, simply pour a bit of white vinegar onto the stained area, let it sit for 1 hour, then gently blot the stain with a damp towel—avoid rubbing vigorously, as this could spread the stain further. If the towel doesn’t fully absorb the moisture, you can use a toothbrush dipped in water to scrub the area clean, followed by drying it thoroughly with a hairdryer.

3. Mattress Sterilization and Odor Removal
If the mattress gets damp, it can develop an unpleasant odor—or even smell after someone urinates on it. To tackle this, first use a vacuum cleaner to remove any debris from the mattress surface. Next, evenly sprinkle baking soda all over the mattress, let it sit for 2 hours, and then vacuum the baking soda off again. This simple trick will eliminate those lingering odors from your bed!

4. Mattress: Eliminating Dust Mites
Over time, mattresses that aren’t cleaned regularly can become breeding grounds for dust mites, which may lead to various health issues such as asthma, allergic rhinitis, and skin allergies. If your mattress is infested with mites, you can use a specialized ultraviolet or ultrasonic mite-removal device to effectively eliminate the pests hiding deep within the mattress.
