"From a young age, our parents have taught us, 'Wash your hands often—staying clean and avoiding germs is the key to staying healthy.' But did you know just how many bacteria actually lurk in items we come into close contact with every day, like bed sheets, pillows, and mattresses?"
A UK study found that a double mattress left uncleaned for about three years harbors over 1 billion bacteria, primarily fungi and dust mites. The bedding we use every night to sleep on likely accumulates dirt and grime, turning it into a "bacterial paradise."

Every day, the human body sheds millions of skin cells—most of which fall off while we sleep. In addition to this, our bodies continuously secrete fluids, sweat, and oils, which end up on the bed. These bodily byproducts create the perfect breeding ground for dust mites and bacteria. What’s more, as bacteria metabolize sweat, they produce unpleasant odors that can linger on the bed over time.
For the health of yourself and your family, as well as to maintain a comfortable sleep environment, it’s essential to regularly wash your sheets, blankets, and pillowcases. Sheets and pillowcases can be cleaned using hot water around 50–60°C, ideally once every 1–2 weeks. Blankets, on the other hand, should be washed every 1–2 months. Keep in mind that many dust mites can burrow deep into the mattress—sometimes up to 10–15 centimeters beneath the surface—making it challenging for ordinary vacuum cleaners or disinfectants to eliminate them completely. To effectively tackle this issue, we recommend hiring a professional mite-removal team to perform deep cleaning and mite-control treatments on your mattress at regular intervals, typically once every 1–2 years.

In addition to regular cleaning, you can also opt for an antibacterial and anti-mite mattress. Dongguan-based, locally-rooted brand Donble Mattress has incorporated antibacterial and anti-mite knitted fabric into its new-generation products, effectively inhibiting the growth of bacteria, mites, and allergens—while offering a remarkably soft, smooth, and skin-friendly feel that’s both comfortable and practical.
As we now enter summer—when the weather is hot and rainy—bacteria and mites thrive in warm, humid environments. To combat this, we should regularly open windows for ventilation and ensure the air remains dry. Also, pets like cats and dogs can carry mites on their fur, so it’s best to keep them out of your bedroom.
