No matter how big the house is, people spend most of their time at home lying in bed. That’s why choosing a good mattress is absolutely essential. There are many types of mattresses—so how do you pick the one that’s right for you?
If you're looking to buy a mattress that’s perfect for your home, start by learning about the different types available. Generally, mattresses on the market fall into six main categories: coconut palm mattresses, latex mattresses, spring mattresses, air mattresses, waterbeds, and functional mattresses. With so many options, each type suits different preferences—some people prefer softer mattresses, while others lean toward firmer ones. But which mattresses are considered firm, and which ones are softer?
Mattresses rely on spring systems for support, while the comfort layer determines whether it’s soft or firm. Chain-spring mattresses offer poor shock absorption—even a slight movement from someone nearby can easily wake you up. On the other hand, mattresses with excellent resilience are less likely to sag over time, making them ideal for those who sleep alone. In contrast, individually pocketed spring mattresses provide superior shock resistance: even if someone rolls around next to you, you’ll barely notice any disturbance—perfect for light sleepers!
Latex mattresses are soft and comfortable, making them a popular choice among young people. However, latex mattresses are also quite delicate—they can’t be washed, exposed to direct sunlight, or left in freezing temperatures. Typically, they start to degrade after three to five years of use, and as they age, they may even become firmer. On the other hand, memory foam mattresses excel at contouring to the body’s natural curves, providing even support across the entire surface.
Coconut palm mattresses only require a comfortable 2-to-3-centimeter layer on the surface—anything beyond that is simply a waste. For instance, there’s no need to layer independent pocket springs beneath the coconut palm or to add 7–8 centimeters of latex or foam on top. In terms of firmness, palm mats are the hardest, followed by memory foam, while latex offers the softest feel with excellent resilience. Young adults may prefer latex mattresses for their comfort and support. However, teenagers, whose spinal systems are still developing, are better off choosing firmer coconut palm mattresses—or, like older adults, opting for a combination of coconut palm and spring layers for optimal support.

There’s a popular belief online that the ideal height from the mattress surface to the floor is level with your knees—typically between 46 and 55 centimeters. In fact, when choosing a mattress thickness, it’s best to refer to the bed frame, as many beds come with a recommended height range marked on the side. Selecting a mattress that matches this guideline ensures both comfort and a visually appealing look. After all, if the mattress is either too thick or too thin, it won’t only feel uncomfortable but may also look unattractive. So, don’t forget to pay attention to mattress size as well!
Buying a mattress is actually more complicated than choosing a car—there are so many varieties to consider, and everyone’s comfort preferences are completely different. That’s why it’s crucial to bring your husband or wife along to the furniture store, lie down on the mattresses yourself, and personally experience how they feel before deciding whether to make a purchase. After all, when it comes to mattresses, it’s not about picking the most expensive one—it’s about finding the one that’s perfect for *you*.
